The tabla is a North Indian percussion instrument consisting of a pair of hand drums, the dayan (right, wood, treble) and the bayan (left, metal/clay, bass). It is used in classical, popular, and devotional music, played with intricate finger and palm movements to create complex rhythmic patterns. The name "tabla" comes from the Arabic word for "drum".
A tambura is a long-necked, plucked string instrument, primarily found in Indian classical music, that provides a continuous harmonic drone to support other musicians. It has four strings, no frets, and is typically made from wood and a hollow gourd. While the term refers to the Indian instrument (also spelled tanpura), it can also refer to a similar Balkan folk instrument with steel strings that is played with a plectrum.
